Manchester United Set Their Standard With Liverpool Win

After an impressive 2-1 win over old rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford, Manchester United have now shown what they are capable of under new manager Erik ten Hag.

The goal going forward will have to be trying to maintain that standard, as the Red Devils look to overcome a poor start to the season to finish in at least the top four.

Manchester United Show True Colors

Pressure was mounting on the shoulders of Ten Hag after an unprecedented start to the season for Manchester United.

The Red Devils, who are contenders in many Premiership tips to finish in the top for this term, lost their first two games to Brighton and Brentford.

Many feared the worst when their following game was against a Liverpool side that had beaten them 4-0 and 5-0 last season.

However, a battling and resilient performance in front of a passionate crowd at Old Trafford saw Manchester United claim the deserved three points.

Not only the result but the manner of the performance will be most pleasing to Ten Hag, the players and the supporters.

United looked like they wanted the win more than their rivals Liverpool, who themselves have made a disappointing start to the season without a win in their first three league outings.

The performance could not have been more contrasting to the one United produced when they suffered a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Brentford in their second game of the campaign.

The Red Devils found themselves four goals down at half-time and never recovered against the Bees.

Now United have shown what they are capable of and consistency will be key over the coming months.

Manchester United Can’t Only Shine Against Rivals

After the win over Liverpool, some will be questioning why that desire and determination to win was lacking in the defeats to Brighton and Brentford.

United have had the tendency in the past to show up when they play rival teams but fall short in other winnable games.

The Red Devils beat rivals Leeds Manchester United convincingly twice last season and did a league double over a strong Tottenham side and beat Arsenal at Old Trafford.

Counter to those results, Manchester United suffered a 4-1 defeat to a Watford side that would eventually be relegated to the Championship.

Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers also went to Old Trafford and picked up wins.

The job for Ten Hag is trying to get his squad to reproduce the togetherness and positive attitude they showed against their rivals from Merseyside.

Getting up for the big games and not taking care of the fixtures that on paper should be won, won’t get Manchester United back to the top.

It’s still very early days in the reign of Ten Hag at Old Trafford and he will need to settle at the Premier League giants.

However, the Dutchman will take great encouragement from what he saw against Liverpool and now the standard has been set.
