(CTN News) – According to ESPN, Tyrion Smith tore his hamstring during practice. Further reporting from NFL Network clarifies that Smith suffered an avulsion fracture in his knee, which involves the hamstring tendon tearing off the bone.

Smith will undergo surgery on Friday, and he is expected to return by December, according to the NFL Network.

A variety of injuries have plagued Tyrion Smith, 31, over the past several seasons, with at least three games missed every year since 2016. His status as an eight-time Pro Bowler when healthy makes him one of the game’s best tackles.

The Dallas Cowboys’ offensive line has undergone massive changes already this season, as left guard Connor Williams left in free agency and right tackle La’el Collins was cut.

In addition to replacing the former, the team identified Tyrion Smith as its left tackle of the future, as well as someone who could start in the short term next to Tyron Smith at guard.

It’s possible that in the wake of Tyrion Smith’s serious injury,

The Cowboys simply kick their first-round pick outside right away, speeding up the process of moving on from the potential future Hall of Famer who has held down the left side of the line since 2012 (Smith played right tackle as a rookie in 2011.)

The other in-house options are 2021 fourth-round pick Josh Ball, who has largely struggled during training camp, 2022 fifth-rounder Matt Waletzko, who has played exclusively on the right side during camp and is coming off an injury, and veteran swing tackle Aviante Collins, who has played just five games since going undrafted out of TCU in 2017.

The Cowboys will monitor roster moves around the league and determine whether to acquire another offensive lineman, according to CBS Sports NFL Insider Jonathan Jones.

It has been rumored that the Patriots are open to trading Isaiah Wynn, who is still a free agent tackle. The Cowboys have plenty of cap space to make a signing or trade if they want to bring someone in from outside the organization.

Despite what the Cowboys choose, all of those options are unlikely to produce the same level of production as Tyrion Smith. It’s a devastating loss for a team that struggled throughout last season as its offensive line dealt with injuries.
