(CTN News) – It is expected that Serena Williams will meet Danka Kovinic for the first time at the US Open, which is set to be her last tournament at the top level in her career.

It is possible for Williams to meet No. 2 seed Anett Kontaveit of Estonia in the second round if he wins this match.
It was announced Thursday that the brackets for the women’s and men’s singles events had been released by the United States Tennis Association for the upcoming season.

Play begins Monday Danka Kovinic and Serena Williams

There will be first-round matches on that day and Tuesday. Danka Kovinic has not yet announced a competition date.

It was announced this month that the 23-time Grand Slam champion, who turns 41 on Sept. 26, was preparing to retire from tennis. While she didn’t specify when she would retire, it sounded like the US Open would be her last tournament.

The hard-court tournament at Flushing Meadows has been won six times by Williams.

In 2021, she lost in the first round of Wimbledon due to an injury, and has been 1-3 this season since returning.

In late June, she lost her first match back at the All England Club in a third-set tiebreaker to 115th-ranked Harmony Tan.

This week, Danka Kovinic is ranked 80th in the WTA rankings and has been as high as 46th. There has never been a singles match between Williams and Kovinic.

At Toronto, Williams was eliminated in straight sets by Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Belinda Bencic, and then again in straight sets against reigning US Open champion Emma Raducanu at Cincinnati.

In the US Open, Williams’ every move will be scrutinized since she has announced she is winding down her career.

While Williams has been in the top spot for more than 300 weeks, her lack of activity has contributed to a slide; she is now 410th.

In New York, she wouldn’t be seeded, so she could have been paired up with anyone — and she could have faced anyone.

Should Williams advance through the tournament, she could face No. 27 seed Martina Trevisan of Italy in the third round and 2021 US Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez of Canada or 2021 French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic in the fourth.

As Danka Kovinic was on opposite sides of the bracket, Venus could only face her sister in the final, as they were on opposite sides of the bracket.
