Patrick Mahomes On Helmet Shattering vs. Dolphins: "A First For Me!"

(CTN News) – There are not many firsts these days when you are as accomplished as Patrick Mahomes on the football field.

As a result of a hard hit from Miami Dolphins safety DeShon Elliott Saturday night, a portion of his helmet was broken.

Afterwards, Patrick Mahomes stated that he was trying to reach the end zone. There is no doubt in my mind that a young Pat would have been able to get into the game. I am getting older. I try not to do it too much, but sometimes things have to be put on the line.

In all probability, it had to do with it being extremely cold at the time. I wasn’t aware of it at the time, but I got into the huddle and everybody was telling me I wasn’t going out of the game.

During the Chiefs’ 26-7 win, the temperatures in Kansas City were below zero and the wind chill was consistently 20 degrees below zero. As a result of the adverse weather conditions, Patrick Mahomes was able to throw for 262 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 41 yards.

During the second of Patrick Mahomes’ two rushing attempts, Elliott and the Chiefs quarterback made helmet-to-helmet contact, and a chunk of the quarterback’s helmet came off at the 2-yard line.

A play was run by Kansas City before officials noticed the safety issue and forced Mahomes to change his helmet on the field.

It has been pointed out to me by Patrick Mahomes that we need to discuss where we will store the backup helmet due to the fact that it has been frozen. It was completely frozen when I tried to put it on.

I couldn’t get it on. I’m not sure if anyone took a picture of it, but I didn’t think it looked good at all. We were able to adjust it on the sideline and get it warmed up a bit, and then we were able to get things moving.”

The referees did not force the Chiefs to burn a timeout for Patrick Mahomes to undergo an equipment change, which is unusual. Since the Dolphins were outclassed from the beginning, the officiating blunder made little difference.

In the Divisional Round, Kansas City will play either the Buffalo Bills or Houston Texans, and Chiefs fans will be hoping Mahomes is able to avoid equipment-shattering hits.
