Injured Matteo Berrettini Withdraws From The Australian Open

(CTN News) – Despite never-ending injuries, Matteo Berrettini was absent from the Australian Open 2024 on Sunday because of Drew.

27-year-old Matteo Berrettini was forced to withdraw from the first grand slam of 2024 due to an injury to his right foot.

The Australian Open opened with Matteo Berrettini facing fellow Grand Slam champion Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first round, setting up one of the most intriguing first-round meetings of the tournament.

However, Zizou Bergs, a Belgian, will step in as a fortunate replacement for the Greek player.

For over 12 months, Matteo Berrettini has been suffering from persistent injuries. It was hoped that when he made the journey to Melbourne, he would be able to complete his recovery after withdrawing from Brisbane International in 2024.

In anticipation of the first-round match, many believed that he would be ready, assuming that he would not undertake such a long trip only to withdraw from the competition.

According to the tournament organisers, Matteo Berrettini is suffering from a right foot injury, which has forced him to withdraw from the competition along with Rafael Nadal.

In the meantime, the Italian is focusing on his recovery and aiming for a speedy return to play. Obviously, his favorite part of the season is the grass-court season, which is still a considerable distance away, providing him with ample recovery time.

As a result, Tsitsipas will now face Zizou Bergs, the lucky loser who will replace the Italian in the main draw. This presents a more manageable draw for the Greek player, who has also battled injuries throughout the first few months of the 2024 season.

Taking Matteo Berrettini place on the Rod Laver Arena on Day 2, this matchup will follow Coco Gauff’s match against Anna Karolina Schmiedlova on the preceding day.
