Barbra Streisand Receives SAG Lifetime Achievement Award

(CTN News) – In recognition of her prolific career and humanitarian efforts, Barbra Streisand received the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Life Achievement Award.

Jennifer Aniston and Bradley Cooper  presented the 81-year-old Streisand with the SAG’s top award. It is given to a performer who embodies the “finest ideals of the acting profession.” She received a standing ovation and many actors shed tears during the ceremony.

In the 1955 film “Guys and Dolls,”  Barbra Streisand was blown away by Marlon Brando and dreamed of becoming an actress as a teenager.

Streisand told the crowd, “That make-believe world was much more pleasant than anything I was experiencing at the time.”

As a child, I didn’t like reality. Despite the fact that I did not look like any of the other women in the movies, I wanted to be in them. In spite of my mother’s advice, I did not learn how to type.

The SAG award put Streisand in the exclusive EGOT club of stars who have won two Oscars, 10 Grammys, five Emmys, and an honorary Tony for “Star of the Decade.”

As entertainer Fanny Brice in 1968’s comedy “Funny Girl,” Barbra Streisand won her first Oscar in 1969. She said she felt close to that character because, as she told the Los Angeles Times, “She wanted everything in life just like I did when I played that role.”

In 1973, she was again nominated for an Oscar for her role as Robert Redford’s love interest in The Way We Were.

In 1983, she directed and starred in the musical drama “Yentl” and in 1991, she did it again in the romantic drama “The Prince of Tides”.

She won her first Grammy in 1964 for “The Barbra Streisand Album,” and twice in 1978 for “Love Theme From A Star is Born (Evergreen),” the movie in which she starred alongside Kris Kristofferson.

Throughout her career, Barbra Streisand has topped the Billboard charts with Broadway standards, pop, jazz, and classical music.

With The Streisand Foundation, Streisand advocates for environmental protection, women’s rights, civil liberties, and nuclear disarmament.

Following a 2022 call with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, she also established a Women’s Heart Center at Cedars-Sinai Hospital.

The 978-page memoir she wrote over the course of ten years was published in late 2023 as a bestseller.
An ode to fellow actors and directors concluded Streisand’s acceptance speech.

“I’ve enjoyed working with you, playing with you, and living in that magical world of the movies,” she said. Most importantly, I am grateful for the joy you have brought me.”
