SAG Awards 2019: Another Battle For The ‘Barbenheimer’ Award

(CTN News) – This Saturday, blockbuster movies ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’ will compete at the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) awards ceremony, a red-carpet event that often predicts Oscar success.

In the SAG Awards field, four nominees come from films that fought in the summer box office battle dubbed ‘Barbenheimer’.

In the competition for the award for best motion picture cast, both movies are competing. There are also three other novels in the running: The Color Purple, Killers of the Flower Moon, and American Fiction.

A live stream of the ceremony will be available on Netflix beginning at 8 p.m. ET, as part of Netflix’s efforts to expand its live programming offerings.

Award recipients will be selected by members of the SAG-AFTRA actors union. There is a close eye on their choices as actors comprise the largest group of voters for the Academy Awards, the highest honors in the film industry, which will be presented next month.

The director Christopher Nolan’s historical drama Oppenheimer, which is a frontrunner for best picture at the Academy Awards, would benefit from a win at the Oscars. At the Golden Globes, the British Academy Film Awards, and other awards ceremonies, the movie about the race to build the first atomic bomb won top prizes.

In the event that feminist doll adventure ‘Barbie’ or another competitor wins, it would turn the race for the Oscars on March 10 on its head.

Emma Stone will compete for best actress in the SAG Awards acting contests for her role as a woman resurrected from the dead in the dark comedy ‘Poor Things’. Among the actresses she will compete with are Margot Robbie, star of ‘Barbie,’ and Lily Gladstone, star of ‘Killers of the Flower Moon,’ a drama about the murders of members of the Osage community in the 1920s.

Cillian Murphy, who played physicist John Oppenheimer, is competing against Bradley Cooper of ‘Maestro’, Paul Giamatti of ‘The Holdovers’ and others for the best actor award.

As part of its final season, ‘Succession’ is nominated for five awards, including best drama series cast and best scripted series. With four nominations each, ‘Ted Lasso’, ‘The Bear’ and ‘The Last of Us’ will attend the ceremony.

SAG Awards-AFTRA will also honor Barbra Streisand, an award-winning actor, producer, director, singer, and songwriter, with a lifetime achievement award.
