(CTN NEWS) – Avengers: Endgame was the ultimate culmination of all the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films that had come before it.
However, the film’s original concept for its most iconic scene would have been rather underwhelming.
The Infinity Saga in the MCU reached its pinnacle with Avengers: Endgame, offering a victory lap for those who had been following the universe since 2008’s Iron Man.
The movie was filled with triumphant moments, and among them, the “Portals” scene stood out as one of the best.
Surprisingly, this iconic scene could have played out quite differently.
Marvel’s Visual Effects Supervisor, Dan Deleeuw, recently revealed that the “Portals” scene in Avengers: Endgame wasn’t the initial version of that sequence.
The original rendition of the scene featured a long panning shot across all the actors, devoid of portals. However, this version didn’t deliver the impact Marvel was aiming for.
Deleeuw and Avengers: Endgame editor Jeff Ford decided that they needed to introduce the portals to the scene, allowing them to choose which heroes would emerge.
This decision transformed the scene and made the film’s conclusion even more memorable, providing the audience with a chance to welcome back their beloved heroes.

“It was interesting because there was a lot of different ideas. There was a version of the cut, the day that we had all the actors together, and it was like this long panning shot across all the actors. It was the day that everyone was there, and it was like this giant, expensive in essentiality you had all the actors there, but it just didn’t play as well as we wanted. And so it was something that I got with pre-viz and Jeff Ford, our editor, and we just said, ‘We have to go with the portals and just you picking who comes out when.’ It was just something that for I think originally it was like we knew who survived and when they were coming back, but we needed to slow it down and give the audience a chance to welcome their heroes back. And so it was so interesting in terms of like, ‘Okay, who comes from Titan first? Okay, you get the Guardians and then Star-Lord’s going to show up.’ And then just being in the theater that day, it’s like starting, okay, we got to do Spider-Man last because Spider-Man!. So it was very much crafted to be emotional, and I think it was amazing for all of us that opening weekend, how well the fans responded to it.”
Why Avengers: Endgame Needed The Portal Scene
As Deleeuw pointed out, Avengers: Endgame’s “Portals” scene provided MCU fans with the perfect opportunity to rejoice and welcome back the heroes who had fallen victim to Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War.
Following the dark conclusion of the previous Avengers film, where numerous MCU heroes disintegrated into dust, the audience was deserving of a moment filled with unadulterated joy to celebrate all the heroes in Avengers: Endgame’s climactic battle.
This scene succeeded so brilliantly because it not only built upon the conclusion of Avengers: Infinity War but also encompassed the entire MCU narrative.
The moment when Sam Wilson, the Falcon, emerged from a portal and uttered the iconic line, “On your left,” to Chris Evans’ Captain America was a heartwarming callback to their earlier camaraderie in 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
Merely reassembling the Avengers and shifting the camera from one hero to another would not have elicited the same visceral response that Avengers: Endgame’s “Portals” scene did from Marvel fans.
The final version of the sequence allowed each returning major hero their moment to shine and be celebrated by the audience.
The inclusion of portals also enhanced Doctor Strange‘s role in the film, providing a fantastical entrance that was befitting of the grand culmination of the Infinity Saga.
Thankfully, the original plan for Avengers: Endgame underwent a transformation, with the portals becoming an integral part of the movie’s epic final battle.
The “Portals” scene in Avengers: Endgame is widely regarded as one of the most iconic and emotional moments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
It takes place during the epic final battle against Thanos and his army. The scene begins with the heroes, including Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor, facing overwhelming odds, and it seems all hope is lost.
However, a sudden burst of magical energy heralds the arrival of reinforcements through mystical portals.
As the portals open, various beloved characters from the MCU, including Black Panther, Spider-Man, and Doctor Strange, make triumphant returns.
The moment is a culmination of the entire MCU, as characters who had previously perished in Avengers: Infinity War return to aid in the fight against Thanos.
It’s a powerful and emotional scene that had a profound impact on audiences.
The original plan for this scene was considerably simpler, with a long panning shot of the heroes.
However, the decision to introduce the portals and give each hero a grand entrance elevated the scene to a whole new level.
It allowed fans to celebrate the return of their favorite characters and provided a sense of closure to the Infinity Saga.
Overall, the “Portals” scene in Avengers: Endgame is a testament to the storytelling and emotional depth of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it stands as a defining moment in the franchise’s history.
