Are The Texans Drafting The Best NFL Class In 2023?

(CTN News) – The Houston Texans, who only won 11 games from 2020 to 2022, are now on the brink of potentially making the playoffs as the 2023 regular season comes to an end.

The impressive efforts of first-year coach DeMeco Ryans have played a significant role, but it is the collective contribution of the rookie class put together by general manager Nick Caserio that has propelled the Texans to a respectable 9-7 record.

The question arises: does Houston have the best rookie class this season? According to Bucky Brooks of NFL Media, who recently ranked the top five classes so far, the Texans claim the second spot.

Only the Detroit Lions surpass them, with a rookie class that includes standout players like tight end Sam LaPorta, running back Jahmyr Gibbs, safety Brian Branch, and linebacker Jack Campbell. With an impressive 11-5 record and their first divisional win since 1993, the Lions have certainly made an impact.

However, it is important to acknowledge the Texans’ smart decision-making in identifying and acquiring talent for the most important position on the field.

Quarterback C.J. Stroud, chosen as the second overall pick, seems poised to win the Offensive Rookie of the Year award, further solidifying Houston’s rookie class as a formidable force.

Following the selection of pass rusher Will Anderson Jr. in the later rounds, the Texans have witnessed his impressive performance with 44 combined tackles, 22 quarterback hits, 10 tackles for a loss, and seven sacks. Unfortunately, third-round pick Tank Dell suffered a left fibula fracture in December, ending his season prematurely.

However, Dell showcased his potential with 47 catches for 709 yards and seven touchdowns prior to his injury. Undoubtedly, this draft class has the potential to reshape the franchise’s future.

Nevertheless, the Texans will not possess a first-round pick in 2024 due to their trade with the Arizona Cardinals to acquire Anderson.

Initially, it appeared that the Texans had traded away a future top-five pick. However, Anderson’s contributions have propelled the Texans to a successful season, resulting in the Cardinals currently projected to have the No. 17 overall pick.

While it is not impossible for the Cardinals to find a better player than Anderson with that pick, it is highly unlikely. As evidenced by the selection of CeeDee Lamb as the 17th pick in the 2020 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys, exceptional talent can still be found at that position.

Furthermore, if the Texans have indeed found their franchise quarterback, which seems to be the case, the 2023 NFL Draft class will be regarded as a resounding success, regardless of the outcomes that lie ahead.
