Pongsaklek Wonjongkam Retains Flyweight Championship

Thailand Pongsaklek Wonjongkam successfully defended his world flyweight title (WBC and belt) at home today with a 12-round, unanimous decision victory over Japan’s Takuya Kogawa. Wongjongkam won scores of 118-110, 117-111 and 116-112.

Pongsaklek (01/03/81, 44 KO) is now likely to expect a challenge from Edgar Sosa of Mexico (42-6, 25 KOs), who has been the mandatory challenger for a while. Both fighters have been dancing around the fight for a while, the Thai star just defending his title twice since Koki Kameda beat for the championship vacant in March 2010. He has fought six times in total since then, but four of the bouts were usually a variety of showcase Thailand embarrassing nonsense, and frankly, neither of the two title defenses have been so impressive, either.

Sosa is offline mainly because he held the WBC junior flyweight years and was a major at 108 pounds. Since returning from an injury sustained in a controversial loss to Rodel Mayol in late 2009, Sosa has won a series of mediocre opponents and installed himself as the leading contender by the WBC in a sample of favoritism and not typical and obvious.

Sosa fight what he says is a final adjustment of the Saturday night against Julio Paz (12-1, 4 KO).
