Rare Scotch Whisky Sells for $2.7 Million in Historic Auction

(CTN News) – Auction records show that a unique bottle of whisky sold for $2.7 million (£2.1 million), more than any other wine or liquor ever sold.

On Saturday, it was sold by Sotheby’s for over twice its projected price.

According to the head of whisky at the auction house, he took a sample of “a tiny drop” of it previously.

“It’s very rich, it’s got a lot of dried fruit as you would expect, a lot of spice, and a lot of wood,” Jonny Fowle told the AFP news agency.

Aged for 60 years in dark oak sherry barrels, this whisky was produced in 1986 as one of only forty bottles.

There have been rumors that some of the 40 bottles were given to The Macallan’s most elite customers rather than made available for purchase.

Moreover, there have always been record-breaking results whenever these bottles have come up for sale; in 2019, for example, a comparable bottle fetched £1.5 million.

Mr. Fowle stated last month that, “is the one whisky that every auctioneer wants to sell and every collector wants to own” in reference to The Macallan 1926, which is being auctioned off.

According to Sotheby’s, the 40 bottles from the 1926 barrel had various labels.

There were two bottles without labels, fourteen with the famous Fine and Rare labels, and twelve with the artwork of pop artist Sir Peter Blake.

Italo-American artist Valerio Adami created 12 more bottles, including Saturday’s record-breaking sale.

How many of the twelve bottles of Macallan Adami from 1926 are still around remains a mystery.

Supposedly, one was shattered in the 2011 Japanese earthquake, and at least one more has been opened and eaten.
