Warriors Take 3-2 Series Lead Over Kings After Winning Game 5 On The Road

(CTN News) – The Golden State Warriors are just one win away from defeating the Sacramento Kings after a historically poor start to the series.

At the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, the Warriors won Game 5 of their opening round series against the Kings 123-116. The Warriors have won their third consecutive game, giving them a 3-2 series lead and allowing them to defend their championship.

As a result, the Kings are at serious risk of blowing a 2-0 series lead in what is their first postseason appearance in 16 years. In the last 15 games played at the Chase Center, the Warriors have won 14 of them. Game 6 is scheduled for Friday.

Steph Curry scores 31 points to lead the Warriors to a late victory

During the first quarter, the Kings jumped out to an early lead, and even took a 10-point lead at the end. The maximum was, however, only that.

After a 11-0 run in the second quarter, the Warriors led by four points at the half. 11 of Klay Thompson’s 16 first-half points were scored in the second quarter, and he shot 4 of 6 from beyond the arc.

After the third quarter, the Warriors increased this lead to nine, and then reached double digits early in the fourth quarter.

The Kings were almost single-handedly brought back into the game by Malik Monk midway through the fourth.

In the middle of the period, Monk sparked a 13-2 run, scoring all but four points to suddenly trim the deficit to one point. A Gary Payton II layup was the only basket during that nearly five-minute period.

It was only after a late surge that the Warriors were able to defeat the Kings. After Andrew Wiggins hit a midrange jumper with 48 seconds remaining, the Warriors were ahead by five points and Stephen Curry converted an and-one layup for an eight-point lead. As a result, the Kings’ run was too late.

It was a seven-point victory for Golden State.

De’Aaron Fox led the Kings with 24 points and nine assists, while Domantas Sabonis added 21 points and 10 rebounds. As a reserve, Monk scored 21 points.

Curry led the with 31 points and eight assists, but he shot just two of 10 from beyond the arc. Thompson contributed 25 points, and Wiggins contributed 20 points. In spite of making only two layups, Warriors center Kevon Looney accumulated 22 rebounds.

Draymond Green, who was suspended earlier in the series for stomping on Sabonis’ chest and repeatedly fighting with Monk, scored 21 points off the bench for Golden State. The game marked his highest point total since Christmas 2019.

The Warriors will play Game 6 on Friday night at the Chase Center in San Francisco, where a win will send them to their seventh Western Conference semifinal in the past nine years.
