Germany's Leaders Seeks to "Lockdown the Unvaccinated"

On Thursday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and her successor Olaf Scholz are expected to approve a de-facto “lockdown for the unvaccinated” to combat a surge in cases of Covid.

Despite tightening Covid restrictions just two weeks ago, Merkel, Scholz and Germany’s 16 state leaders are discussing even tougher measures amid a raging fourth wave of the virus.

A draft agreement seen by European Media says anyone who has not been vaccinated or hasn’t recovered from Covid — known as 2G in Germany — will be banned from entering bars, restaurants, theatres, cinemas and other leisure facilities.

In addition to being banned from Christmas markets and non-essential shops, unvaccinated people would be restricted from socializing with others.

In addition, the agreement calls for new restrictions on large gatherings, such as soccer matches in the Bundesliga. It also calls for the closure of nightclubs in areas where infection rates are above 350 per 100,000 people.

Jens Spahn, who is acting in a caretaker capacity as the new government is sworn in next week, told ZDF that Germany needed to ensure vaccinations for the unvaccinated.

As a precautionary measure, some hard-hit regions in Germany have cancelled Christmas markets and restricted access to public spaces, such as gyms and leisure centres, for the unvaccinated.

However, critics say the patchwork of rules is confusing, and Thursday’s emergency meeting aims to create uniform rules across the nation.

In addition to supporting mandatory vaccination in Germany, the draft agreement suggests that it could be implemented as early as February. Earlier this week, Scholz said he wanted the matter to be voted on by parliament before year’s end.

Scholz told Bild television that too many people are not vaccinated. He said making vaccinations compulsory is justified “for the sake of our safety.”
