That Prevents Icons From Combining

(CTN NEWS) – Since Windows 11’s release, the taskbar, one of the core components of the operating system, has been implemented in somewhat of a contentious manner.

A Windows researcher recently discovered proof that a Windows 10 feature that developers rejected for Windows 11 will soon be back.

Soon, users of Windows 11 will be able to disable the taskbar’s ability to combine app icons when it runs out of space.

The feature is still there in Windows 10, and when Windows 11 was released without it, many people asked for its reinstatement.

One of several taskbar enhancements verified by Microsoft with the most recent Windows 11 preview build, incidentally, is this one.

Microsoft has not yet publicly announced the impending taskbar customisation features that Windows Researcher Albacore demonstrated in a video he posted.

He switches the icon orientation from left to centre, toggles the task view and widget icons, and alters the search bar’s appearance in the video. In the tweet, Albacore also makes reference to item labels and ungrouped items.

Windows 11 taskbar was unpopular at launch, but Microsoft has added various new features over the last year

These modifications are not mentioned in this week’s Insider Preview blog article, and it is unknown when these improvements will be made available to additional users.

With the most recent version, build 23440, users can right-click the system tray to diagnose network issues and hide the time and date.

The taskbar allows users to instantly check the most recent insider release notes. Some of these features were present in earlier Windows releases.

Although the Windows 11 taskbar wasn’t well received when it first came out, Microsoft has since introduced a number of new capabilities.

The company modified the user interface for touch mode, redesigned the overflow capability for multiple windows, and added Bing’s AI-powered search capabilities.

Microsoft may also soon introduce the option to force-quit programmes simply right-clicking the taskbar rather than using the task manager.

However, the option to shift the taskbar to the sides or top of the screen—a much-requested feature from older Windows editions—won’t be coming back any time soon.

Microsoft stated last year that it doesn’t believe there have been enough user complaints to warrant the amount of work needed to bring back the moveable taskbar.

Every app icon would need to be tested for compatibility by the company. With the addition of more apps to Windows 11, the chore could get even more difficult.

In the meanwhile, you can attempt a third-party taskbar solution if the built-in Windows 11 taskbar doesn’t offer the features you need.
