Man Mauled to Death After Trying to Take a Selfie with Zoo Lion
An Indian man in his 30s has been mauled to death by a lion at a zoo in India after he entered the lions enclosure to take a selfie with the big feline.
Mr. Prahlad Gujjar, from Rajasthan in northern India, went over a fence at Sri Venkateswara Park in Andhra Pradesh state despite a zookeeper’s advice to keep his distance, according to India’s news media.
“Though the zookeeper on duty cautioned him not to get close to the enclosure, Prahlad intentionally marched towards the enclosure, which has a four feet (1.2m) wall and six feet (1.8m) tall iron fencing, and jumped in,” claimed zookeeper C. Selvam to India Today.
Mr Gujjar entered a non-public location and jumped into the enclosure at around 2.30pm, according to police inspector Thameem Ahmed.
The female lion attacked the man before the zookeeper could respond.
The police examiners are currently conducting a postmortem on Gujjar’s body and are investigating if he was intoxicated at the time of the event. Police report Mr Gujjar went to the zoo alone, and his family has been notified of the event.
The lioness, one of the zoo’s three lions, has since been relocated to a cage and is under monitoring.
“We have taken every measure to avoid such events and we will re-evaluate security procedures to prevent similar events in the future,” Mr Selvam stated.
