Van Crash in Chaiyaphum Kills Monk and 3 Elderly Women

On Saturday morning, a monk and three elderly women were killed, and six others were critically injured, when a van carrying them to a cremation ceremony drove off the road and struck a tree in Chatturat district in in Chaiyaphum.

According to Policle, who was alerted about 9.30 a.m., the deadly incident occurred on Highway 201 in tambon Laharn in in Chaiyaphum.

When police and emergency workers arrived at the scene, they discovered the van with Khon Kaen license plates close to a tree on the median. Its front end was severely damaged.

Four people were discovered dead, while six others were critically injured. Everyone was suffocating inside the van.

The victims were a senior monk, later identified as Phra Khru Yanworawisut Wanalusor of Satikaram temple in Khon Kaen, and three elderly women. Mr. Khamman Donphonphan, the van driver, was injured, as were four other elderly women and a man.

All of them were taken to local hospitals.

According to police, the vehicle was on its way to a royally funded funeral ceremony in Chaiyaphum’s Bamnet Narong district when it drove off the road on a curve and collided with a road divider. The impact killed the monk and the three women on the spot.

Police are studying closed-circuit television cameras and questioning the injured and witnesses to learn more about the cause of the tragedy.
