Thai Police Plan to Spend Bt30 Million on Anti-Riot Equipment

An Opposition lawmaker in Thailand has challenged a plan by the Royal Thai Police to purchase more anti-riot equipment at a price tag of 30 million baht.

In an announcement on its website, the police stated that it would purchase 195,000 baht in chemical foams for police cannon trucks from ABC Protection Supply; 23,166,000 baht in tear gas from K Tree Corporation; and over 12 million baht in Long Range Acoustic Devices, or LRADs, from Engineering Reward (Thailand).

The equipment was frequently deployed by riot police during clashes with anti-government protesters in the past year, leading to several injuries. The police have declared those gatherings illegal since public assemblies are currently prohibited under a Coronavirus emergency law.

Nittcha Boonlue, a politician for the Thai Sang Thai Party, criticizes the proposed purchase. According to Nittcha, the money could have been better spent addressing other urgent matters, such as the spreading of Coronavirus, the proliferation of drugs, or crimes.

She also expressed concern that the newly purchased riot equipment would be used to suppress dissidents.

In order to serve those in power, is it right for the government to purchase these weapons to crush those who think differently?” asked Nittcha.
