Meta Seeks Industry-Wide Labels for AI-Generated Images

(CTN News) – Meta announced it was working with other technology firms to develop standards that will improve the detection and labeling of artificially generated images shared among its billions of users.

It is expected that the Silicon Valley social media titan will have a system in place within a few months in order to identify and tag AI-created images posted on its Facebook, Instagram and Threads platforms.

Nick Clegg, Meta global affairs director,

told AFP that the technology has not yet been fully matured, so it is not perfect, it will not cover everything. The company has implemented visible and invisible tags on images created with its own artificial intelligence tools since December, but wants to work with other companies in order to maximize transparency for users, Clegg stated.

As a result, we have been working with industry partners to align on common Meta technical standards that indicate when content has been created using artificial intelligence.

The Meta company will work with OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, Midjourney and other firms involved in the fierce competition for leadership in the nascent field, Clegg said.

According to Clegg, despite the fact that some companies have begun including “signals” in images produced with AI tools, the industry has been slower to do the same with audio and video produced with AI tools.

Although Clegg acknowledges that large-scale labeling using invisible markers will not eliminate the risk of false images being produced, he argues that it would minimize this risk “within the limits of current technology.”

Additionally, Meta advised people to examine online content critically and to look for details that appear unnatural.

The popularity of so-called “deepfake” images has made politicians and women prime targets. Recently, AI-created nudes of superstar Taylor Swift went viral on X, formerly Twitter.

Also, the rise of generative AI has raised concerns that disinformation or AI clones could be used to sow political chaos via ChatGPT and other platforms.

Last month, OpenAI announced that it would “prohibit the use of our platform by political organizations or individuals.”.

Currently, Meta asks advertisers to disclose when AI is used to create or alter imagery or audio in political advertisements.
