Man in Thailand Accused of Molesting 9-Year-Old Stepdaughter
According to an arrest warrant, a 59-year-old man in central Thailand has been accused of molesting his 9-year-old stepdaughter. Police said a man known as Muek, was charged with the rape of a girl under 13 years old.
The girl is alleged to have been abused while her mother was at work.
His home was raided by police on Nov 24. He denied the charge. The police took him to Prachin Buri Provincial Court on Friday and applied to extend his custody for 12 days.
According to reports, the girl’s elder sister had previously left the family home after being abused. Their father had died years ago, and their mother had remarried.
Thailand has also seen an increase in cases of child sexual abuse due to the pandemic. It leaves more and more potential victims at risk because they are at home unsupervised. Children are bored and spend a lot of time online.
Children were subjected to more abuse, including the taking of pornographic images, according to police and child protection organizations.
The lockdown also makes it easy for minors, usually aged ten to 18, to be abused online, said Boom Mosby of the Hug Project, which combats human trafficking and sexual abuse.
Children and youth in Thailand who have experienced child sexual molestation are known to suffer reduced physical and psychological well-being throughout their lifetime.
They may also experience difficulty in relationships with friends, family members, and teachers, face difficulties in school and career, and are two to four times more likely to suffer abuse again. According to a study published in Psychological Medicine in 2019, those who were sexually molested as children are also three times more likely to attempt suicide.
