Almost 50 Million Methamphetamine Pills Seized in Thailand During 2018 World Cup
BANGKOK – Thailand’s Ministry of Defense reported that almost 50 million methamphetamine pills were seized in Thailand during the 2018 FIFA World Cup, and it is still necessary to continue monitoring the drug situation.
The Defense Ministry Spokesman, Lt. Gen. Kongcheep Tantrawanich, said the Defense Minister, Gen. Prawit Wongsuwan, had commended internal security forces for their operation to eradicate narcotics throughout the country.
This June, 43 million methamphetamine pills and nearly 600 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, also known as ice, were seized.
The Spokesman said Gen. Prawit also provided all security personnel moral support and wanted them to keep up on what they are doing and integrate their efforts for the benefits of the public.
Lt. Gen. Kongcheep said the Defense Minister was especially concerned that syndicates might use FIFA World Cup 2018 as an opportunity to bring more drugs into the country, he said.
Lt. Gen. Kongcheep added that Gen. Prawit wanted security forces to coordinate closely with drug enforcement agencies and pay close attention to Thailand’s border areas, where drugs are smuggled in and stored before distribution.
