Twelve Killed in Tragic Bus Accident
12 passengers on the pickup truck instantly died at the spot, 4 others passengers, one on the pickup truck and three on the bus, were seriously wounded and admitted to nearby hospital
Twelve mourners were killed when their packed pickup truck collided with a passenger bus as they travelled to the funeral of a relative in northeastern Thailand, police said Saturday.
The accident occurred in Nang Rong district of Buri Ram province, about 300 kilometres north-east of Bangkok.
Ten women and two men, many of whom were sitting in the open-top rear of the truck, were killed instantly in the smash in Buriram province. Four other people were injured.
Police found 12 bodies in a ditch where the bus and pickup truck had overturned after the crash.
Colonel Pongsak Suk-im, commander of the local Nangrong district police, told CRT that the early morning collision happened when the truck pulled onto a main road in front of a long-distance bus from Bangkok.
Thailand’s highways generally report a higher carnage rate during the New Year’s holidays, as millions of Thais leave Bangkok to return to their homes in the provinces and the well-to-do head for the beaches or hillside resorts.
From Thursday to Friday, some 94 people had died and another 1,051 were injured in 955 road accidents nationwide, the Road Safety Centre announced Saturday.
