CHAIYAPHUM – The owner of the three dogs that mauled a 4-year-old girl to death in Northeastern Thailand has accepted full responsibility and promised to compensate her family.

Piyanat Daengsoi said details of the compensation would be discussed after the funeral of Thanyalak Salittakun at a temple in Ban Khwao district of Chaiyaphum Province.

The 27-year-old dog owner said he was shocked and saddened, and offered his apologies to the girl’s family. “I knew her very well as she lived in the same neighborhood. She was like my niece,” he added.

Three of his dogs – a poodle and two Thai breeds – slipped their chains and attacked the young girl while she was riding her small bicycle along a path on Tuesday evening. She died from her injuries on the way to Ban Khwao Hospital.

Mr Piyanat said he had four dogs. Three had attacked the girl. The other remained chained up. His dogs had never bitten anybody before, he said.

Police have charged him with carelessness in failing to control his pets and leading to an attack on a person. The charge carries a maximum penalty of a 10,000 baht fine and/or jail term up to one month.
