Toyota Partners With Cirba Solutions To Enhance Battery Recycling Network.
(CTN News) – Toyota Motor North America has partnered with Cirba Solutions, a battery recycling materials and management company, to expand its battery recycling network.
In an announcement on Thursday, Toyota stated that it will collect batteries from hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and battery electric vehicles. The collaboration with Cirba Solutions will primarily focus on the collection, transportation, dismantling, and processing of end-of-life lithium-ion batteries from the Midwest and East Coast regions.
The processing will be carried out at Cirba Solutions’ facility in Lancaster, Ohio, utilizing advanced technology to extract critical minerals from scrap and end-of-life batteries.
This process is expected to achieve a remarkable recovery rate of up to 95%, with the recovered battery-grade metals being reintroduced into the supply chain.
In a statement, Christopher Yang, group vice president of Business Development at Toyota Motor North America, highlighted the significance of Cirba Solutions’ extensive transportation and recycling network in facilitating nationwide battery collection and recycling.
This collaboration not only helps reduce costs for Toyota but also contributes to minimizing our operational carbon footprint. Currently, Toyota collects around 25,000 used automotive batteries annually from its dealership network, primarily nickel-metal hydride batteries found in hybrid electric vehicles.
As the sales of battery electric vehicles grow, the automaker anticipates a rise in the number of batteries, particularly end-of-life lithium-ion batteries, that will need to be collected and recycled.
Toyota expects to achieve a significant reduction in its transportation and logistics expenses through its partnership with Cirba Solutions.
By decreasing the average distance traveled for collection and recycling from 1,251 to 582 miles, based on 2022 data, and by concentrating on the Midwest and East Coast regions, the company aims to lower its overall costs by at least 70%.
This agreement is expected to have a positive impact on Toyota’s operational efficiency and financial performance. Please note that this information is subject to copyright and cannot be published, broadcasted, rewritten, or redistributed without permission from The Associated Press.
