2 Children, Including 6 People Killed By A Tornado Near Des Moines, Iowa
MADISON COUNTY, Iowa (WLS) — A Tornado killed six people late Saturday afternoon in Madison County, Iowa, county officials confirmed in a news conference.
According to authorities, four people were also injured by the tornado. Several buildings were damaged and trees and power lines were downed by the tornado which swept through central Iowa. Details about what happened were not released or those killed weren’t identified.
According to a Tweet from the National Weather Service of Des Moines, “interrogation of images and videos suggests that at least EF3 tornado damage occurred late Saturday afternoon,” adding that “NWS survey teams will be out Sunday to thoroughly investigate the damage and assess a potential tornado rating.”
Winterset, a small community in Madison County, had some of the most severe damage as a result of the tornadoes that moved through Iowa for hours Saturday. The Des Moines suburb of Norwalk and areas just east of Des Moines were also damaged by storms.
Numerous houses were damaged, roads were blocked by downed lines, and tree branches were shredded by the winds. There were pictures posted on social media showing downed trees, debris, and damaged roofs and vehicles.
Lee, Ogle, and Winnebago counties were warned of severe thunderstorms until 10:30 p.m. Saturday. There is a severe thunderstorm watch in effect for Boone, De Kalb, Ford, Grundy, Kane, Kendall, La Salle, Lee, Livingston, and McHenry counties until 2:00 a.m. on Sunday.
