Thailand Records 263 Road Accident Deaths in Only 5 Days
Thailand’s Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reported that as of Sunday 263 people have been killed in road accidents. On Sunday alone 34 people were killed in 307 road accidents nationwide.
Boontham Lertsukheekasem, director-general of the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department, said yesterday that another 311 people were injured in the 307 accidents, bringing the total to 2,198.
Speeding was a major issue in 34% of the accidents, while drunk driving was a significant factor in 29%.
A total of 81% of the accidents involved motorcycles and 8% involved pickup trucks, the next highest group.
Most accidents occurred in Trang, in the south. Bangkok and Udon Thani recorded the most deaths, each with three. In the West, Kanchanaburi registered the most injuries from road accidents (15).
53 provinces were road-death-free including Chiang Rai.
So far, 263 people have been killed and 2,198 injured in road accidents during the first five days of the holiday period (Dec 29-Jan 2).
Chiang Mai had the most traffic accidents (82), Bangkok had the most deaths (17) and Chiang Mai had the most injuries (78).
