According to the CEO, users can now respond to any message in a direct message thread and use any emoji. Users previously could only respond to the most recent message in a DM thread and could only use certain emojis.
Encrypted direct messages “should” be available on Wednesday, Musk said.
The only people who can read an encrypted message are the sender and the recipient. In theory, neither Twitter nor Musk could monitor or intercept user-to-user communications.
If “the acid test is that I could not see your DMs even if there was a gun to my head,” as Musk put it on Twitter, “that’s it.”
The Messenger service, owned by Facebook parent company Meta, announced in January that it was increasing tests for default end-to-end encryption. Meta’s other messaging app, WhatsApp, has supported end-to-end encryption for a long time.

So that individuals can “talk to people anywhere in the world” without sharing their phone numbers, Musk also announced that Twitter would soon provide voice and video conversations.
Previous CEOs of Twitter have paid little attention to expanding the direct messages feature since its launch. However, Musk has made it clear on multiple occasions that he wants to turn Twitter into an “everything app” that offers everything from chat to banking.
Upgraded Twitter Functions Musk’s product rollouts are notoriously unpredictable. In February, he announced that Twitter would begin distributing some of its advertising money to the platform’s content providers. That has not taken place as of yet.
