Facebook's $725 Million Privacy Settlement: How To Apply

(CTN News) – Facebook users have until August to claim their share of the $725 million class-action settlement of a lawsuit alleging the company violated privacy rights in its use of the social network.

Facebook disclosed in 2018 that the information of 87 million users was improperly shared with Cambridge Analytica and this prompted the lawsuit to be filed.

It is important to note that people who had an active U.S. Facebook account between May 2007 and December 2022 have until August 25 in order to submit a claim for compensation.

Payments have not yet been established for each individual settlement as payouts depend on how many claims are submitted and how long each individual has had an account on Facebook.

In addition to being used by the presidential campaign of Donald Trump and by Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, Cambridge Analytica was also used by the Democratic National Committee.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg was forced to testify before Congress as a result of the breach, and he also took out a full-page advertisement that apologized for missteps.

There was a time when we should have done more, but I regret that we didn’t. We are taking steps to ensure that this does not happen again in the future,” Zuckerberg said in a statement.

There was a class-action lawsuit filed against in 2021 against Meta, a rebranding of the company. This lawsuit was settled in 2022.

As far as Meta is concerned, she has not admitted any wrongdoing. The company spokesperson said at the time that it pursued a settlement because it was in the best interest of the company’s community and shareholders to do so. There was no additional comment from a spokesperson for Meta.

In order to make a claim, Facebook users will have to visit Facebookuserprivacysettlement.com and enter their name, address, email address, and confirm that they are an American citizen and were active on Facebook between the aforementioned dates.
