Young Women Rescued from Prostitution



67 ethnic Shan women from Myanmar, 37 of whom were under the age of 18


Young  women rescued from a prostitution ring in Chanthaburi earlier this month had been drawn under the noses of local police.

On November 09, police and officials Chanthaburi Department of Special Investigation (DSI) Navy raided massage parlor on the way to Tha Chalaeb in the center of Chanthaburi.

Police rescued 67 women of ethnic Shan from Myanmar, 37 of whom were under 18 years. Now they have been entrusted to the care of the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security.

Pol Lt Col Komvich Pathanarat, director of prevention of trafficking of the ISD and the center of the crackdown, said he was warned last month by an organization of women’s rights that girls and women of Burma had been deceived to work as prostitutes in the massage room.

The organization said that although he had alerted the local police to the problem, little has been done so appealed to the DSI.

Pol Pol Lt Komvich said after the information had been verified, he and Chanthaburi police had developed a plan to rescue workers.

The officer said he was looking for a girl named AEY 16 years after his aunt called the police and ISD across networks of human trafficking in Burma to find it. Said the girl, along with two friends from Burma, were lured into the sex industry by a smuggler for six months.

The dealer made arrangements for crossing the border in Mae Sai district, Chiang Rai, where they were picked up by a Thai man.

Pol Lt. Col. Komvich initial checks have found that four influential people are behind the trafficking networks in the north.

Women who have been attracted to undergo a “trial” in massage parlors in Chanthaburi.

If they pass this test, which will be sent to work in Bangkok.

He said the DSI is to locate those behind the net.

After being rescued, AEY police that she and her friends were taken to the massage room in Chanthaburi and stayed with other women who had been attracted by the job.

They are forbidden to leave the court compound and could not work without good reason would be 3,000 baht deducted from their wages every day, he said.
