Hong Kong Tourism Board Promises Largest New Year's fireworks Celebration Ever

(CTN News) – On December 31, the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) will host the biggest New Year Countdown Celebrations ever with the slogan “New Year, New Legend” for the benefit of both locals and tourists from all over the globe.

The size and duration of this year’s countdown fireworks display are expected to be unprecedented. Join us as we ring in 2024 amid the twinkling fireworks display at Victoria Harbour.

New Year, New Legend” theme promises an unforgettable experience

Among Asia’s most mesmerizing countdown events, the Hong Kong New Year Countdown Celebrations have traditionally drawn huge audiences and been extensively covered by domestic and foreign media, according to Dane Cheng, Executive Director of the HKTB. This year’s New Year’s Eve festivities in Hong Kong will surpass all previous ones in size and scope.

Large audiences will undoubtedly flock to see the performance in person, especially because it is a musical blending of East and West. The captivating visual and auditory spectacle set to take place in Victoria Harbour on New Year’s Eve will surely add to the city’s electric nightlife and showcase Hong Kong’s special allure.

Victoria Harbour will be a magnificent setting for the “New Year, New Legend” fireworks spectacular on New Year’s Eve when the countdown clock on the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre wall strikes midnight.

Fireworks will last 12 minutes and cover a distance of 1,300 meters, stretching from Central to North Point. Liu Lin, who oversaw the fireworks project and its operation during the 2008 Beijing Olympics, created the choreography.

As the seasons turn, the performance takes the audience on a journey from winter to spring, summer, and fall, only to return to winter again, symbolising life’s cyclical nature.

According to Liu, “The countdown firework performance demonstrates the optimism and diligence of the people of Hong Kong, who inspire boundless vitality and innovation, and have given birth to one legend after another.”

The fireworks will be launched from various angles and heights using five barges, each equipped with sixteen floats, laid out in two layers.

This arrangement will enhance the three-dimensional appearance. Spectacular, glitzy, and breathtaking, this will light up the harbour and the night sky. Chiu Tsang-hei, a world-renowned musician, reimagined the fireworks’ sonata by fusing electronic, classical, and Chinese instrumental styles.

Performing a reimagined classical composition, the world-renowned violinist Yao Jue will showcase the glitz and glitter of Hong Kong’s East-meets-West cultural mix in the middle portion.

The five-part fireworks show consists of the following: an introduction, three acts, and a final scene (the conceptual images are for illustration purposes only):

At 11 p.m., three famous Hong Kong Island landmarks—Harcourt House, Harbour Centre, and Cheung Kong Center—will send off rooftop pyrotechnics every fifteen minutes. Take a moment to pray under these dazzling pyrotechnic stars for love, health, happiness, and plenty. Explore new viewpoints from Hong Kong Island and Kowloon.

The public may now watch this year’s countdown from even more areas, thanks to the opening of new beachfront amenities. These include the famous viewing points along the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront, the Central harbourfront, and Golden Bauhinia Square in Wan Chai.

Some examples of such promenades are the one in the West Kowloon Cultural District, the one in Wan Chai Harbour Chill, and the one that stretches from North Point to the East Coast Park Precinct.

Sound systems will be installed at each viewing location to ensure that everyone can hear the fireworks music. The public and guests can enjoy this audio-visual celebratory feast at various sites throughout the harbour, thanks to Radio 2 of Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) broadcasting the show’s soundtrack concurrently.

You can watch the “Hong Kong New Year Countdown Celebrations” in its entirety on many platforms, including the official website of the Hong Kong Tourism Board (discoverhongkong.com), the HKTB’s Facebook page and YouTube channel, and ViuTV 99’s website and mobile app.

To bring the joy of Hong Kong’s festivities to people all over the globe, the HKTB will also use satellite broadcasts to share the festivities in other nations and regions.

New Year’s Eve will gradually implement traffic control measures and road closures in Central, Tsim Sha Tsui, and Wan Chai to ensure the event runs well.

Sailings in central Victoria Harbour and services at Kowloon Public Pier will be temporarily discontinued due to sea traffic. The public is encouraged to consult the announcements made by the appropriate government agencies.
