Big Tech Starts Cancelling Russell Brand Over Alleged Sexual Assaults

YouTube said on Tuesday that it had barred Russell Brand from making money from his online channel following allegations of sexual assault against the British actor and comedian.

Brand, a former high-profile British comedian and broadcaster, declared on Saturday that he had never had non-consensual sex.

The Sunday Times and Channel 4 TV’s documentary show “Dispatches” both stated that four women accused the 48-year-old of sexual assaults, including a rape, between 2006 and 2013.

Since their publication on Saturday, the claims against Brand have sent shockwaves through the British media, dominating news.

The BBC announced on Tuesday that it had pulled several Brand-related programming from its iPlayer and Sounds platforms after determining that some previous television and radio content “now falls below public expectations.”

Caroline Dinenage, chair of the Culture, Media and Sport Committee, said she had written to the BBC, Channel 4 and GBNews, as well as the tech firm TikTok, about the claims.

On Monday, London police confirmed they had received a sexual assault accusation dating back to 2003.

Brand, the ex-husband of American singer Katy Perry, has repositioned himself in recent years to amass a YouTube following of more than 6.5 million people.

Recent videos featured an interview with former Fox News personality Tucker Carlson, as well as conversations on topics ranging from COVID to UFOs, censorship, and overall well-being.

YouTube, owned by Alphabet Inc (GOOGL.O), said it has halted monetization on Brand’s channel after he breached its creator responsibility policy. “We take action to protect the community if a creator’s off-platform behaviour harms our users, employees, or ecosystem,” a YouTube representative stated.

The parliamentary committee chair, Dinenage, questioned TikTok if Brand could still monetize his Tiktok posts. She also requested timetables and progress reports on the BBC and Channel 4 investigations into Brand.

On Saturday, Russell Brand posted a video message on social media to reject the “very serious criminal allegations.”

“These allegations relate to a time when I was working in the mainstream, when I was constantly in the newspapers and in the movies.” “And, as I’ve written extensively in my books, I was extremely promiscuous,” Brand admitted.

“Now, during that time of promiscuity, the relationships I had were absolutely always consensual,” added the flamboyantly dressed comedian.

Brand’s planned live gigs have also been cancelled since the claims were made public.
