CAMBODIA – Four teenage boys have been arrested in Takeo province in Cambodia for allegedly gang-raping a 15-year-old girl after a wedding party in Angkor Borei district, according to The Cambodia Daily.

Provincial Police Chief Ouk Samnang said they arrested them on the 26th after they received a complaint from the victims parents on the same day.

“They have confessed that they committed the crime,” he added. “Now we are investigating to find out why.”

Mr. Samnang said an investigating judge was pursuing the case and that the suspects were having their urine tested for traces of drugs.

District penal police chief Chhuon Thy said the alleged rape took place on April 13 at about 11 p.m., as the girl was walking home alone from a nearby wedding party.

“When the girl was on the way back home, the four teens grabbed her and dragged her to a hut in a rice field about 700 meters away from her house, and they took turns raping her,” he said.

Mr. Thy said the girl returned to Phnom Penh, where she worked as a food vendor, without telling her parents about the incident, but finally told them upon her return home on Sunday.

“After we received the complaint from the parents, we called the four boys for questioning and they confessed,” he said.

District police chief In Southa, however, said the four suspects admitted to molesting the girl but denied that there was intercourse.

He said the girl first revealed what had happened to her boss in Phnom Penh, who took her to a hospital in the city after she fell ill on the job.

Chhan Sokunthea, head of women’s and children’s rights for the NGO Adhoc, said this was the fifth reported case of gang rape in the country this year, nearly as many as the six reported cases in all of 2014.
