PHUKET — British kickboxer Lee Aldouse was sentenced to 25 years in prison on Thursday for the murder of former U.S. marine Dashawn Longfellow following a bar fight on the popular tourist island of Phuket.

The 30-year-old Aldouse, known in Phuket by his ring name “The Pitbull”, was originally given a life sentence, but it was immediately reduced to 25 years because he pleaded guilty to the murder charge.

The shaven-headed Aldhouse appeared in Phuket’s Provincial Court Thursday morning in prison fatigues, with his hands and ankles shackled.

Aldhouse stabbed to death the 23-year-old Longfellow, a decorated veteran of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, on August 14, 2010, a few hours after the two had gotten into a fight in Phuket’s Freedom Bar.

Aldhouse immediately fled Thailand, but was arrested at London’s Heathrow airport on his return to Britain.

He became the first British suspect to be extradited to Thailand under a century-old treaty after losing a two-year extradition battle, said reports.

He was returned to Phuket last December on the condition he would not face the death penalty. Otherwise, he could have faced the death penalty under Thai murder laws.

Initially, Aldhouse denied murdering Mr Longfellow but at a hearing on August 28, he changed his plea to guilty, and apologised to Mr Longfellow’s family.

This allowed the judge in the case to apply the standard halving of sentence for those who are believed to genuinely enter a plea of “guilty”.

Aldhouse’s lawyer Kampon Siriwatanyoo said that there were no plans at the moment to appeal against the sentence or to make a court bid to allow him to serve out his sentence in the UK.

“He says he has plenty of things to do in the prison here,” the lawyer said.
