BANGKOK – Carlo Konstantin Kohl (Australia’s Opal Bandit) a German accused of leading a gang of thieves in Australia escaped Interpol officers while waiting for a connecting flight to Germany at Suvarnabhumi airport, authorities confirmed Sunday.

The suspect Carlo Konstantin Kohl, was arrested and charged in Australia, but managed to escape while being taken back to Germany.

The Australian police accompanying him had gone to sleep in a transit room at the airport after arriving on May 15. Their connecting flight to Germany had been delayed. When they awoke, they discovered he was no longer in their custody, he said.

Immigration police and the Airports of Thailand (AoT) will meet Monday to discuss the investigation into the suspect’s escape.

‘’He faces a charge of illegally entering the country and investigators of the Immigration Bureau are trying to locate him.’’

Pol Maj Gen Suvitchpol said the German had completed a jail term in Australia and he was being accompanied by Australian authorities back to Germany to face outstanding charges there.

Pol Maj Gen Suvitchpol also said Thai authorities should not be blamed for the fugitive’s escape. Australian police had not alerted Thai immigration authorities that they were escorting a prisoner through Suvarnabhumi airport en route to Europe.

“Usually, the immigration police must be informed if any foreign suspect is brought into the country but I have no idea why this case is different,” he said.

Kohl was not carrying travel documents and Thai immigration records show no evidence of the man entering Thailand, however security footage shows a man passing through a security door with airline staff.

The guards who travelled with the man were from Serco, the company that provides security services for the department, Thai airport authorities have launched an investigation into what happened.
