The Spotify Competitor Clubhouse Has Been Shut Down
(CTN News) – Music Ally (via TechCrunch) reports that Spotify is shutting down its live audio app, Spotify Live, which was first reported by Music Ally.
According to The Verge, a spokesperson for Spotify confirmed in a statement that the company is planning to “sunset the Live app,” since it no longer makes sense as a standalone application, according to Gayle Gaviola Moreau.
As an alternative, Spotify has instead indicated that it will continue to offer live audio in limited ways on the main Spotify app, such as listening parties, a feature that lets top fans connect with artists virtually in a virtual environment.
In an attempt to get more information about whether the Live features will still be incorporated into the main audio app, The Verge reached out to Spotify for clarification, but the company didn’t provide any details. In spite of the fact that Spotify Live is being shut down completely, Gaviola Moreau says the company is still investing in, innovating, and experimenting on new formats for artists and listeners around the world.
As a result, a new app called Greenroom was launched in 2021 by the popular music streaming service.
As a result of all the hype surrounding social audio app Clubhouse, the company developed the app as a response to that app, and even acquired the live audio service Betty Labs for €57 million (around $67.7 million at the time) in order to help with that.
According to reports, Spotify has rebranded its Greenroom service as Spotify Live and has been moved into the main Spotify app to make it more visible after it was reported that the service was struggling to gain traction.
Later on, the music streaming service closed down the creator fund it set up for Live and even canceled some of its original shows that it had made.
Based on our learnings, we no longer believe that a standalone app makes sense, even though we believe there is a future for live interaction between fans and creators in the ecosystem,” Gaviola Moreau says.
We have seen promising results with the artist-focused use case of “listening parties,” which we will continue to explore to enable live interactions between artists and their fans.
Our experience with this use case has been promising.
Apart from Spotify, Meta also reduced its audio product offerings last year as a result of a budget reduction.
Additionally, the company has shut down its podcasts feature as well as its short-form audio feature, Soundbites, in addition to folding its Clubhouse-like Live Audio Rooms into the Facebook Live application.
As part of the announcement, Reddit also said it would shut down its audio-only Reddit Talk feature earlier this month, while Amazon made staffing cuts at its live radio app Amp last year as well.
