Amazon Shuts Down Hybrid Virtual, In-Home Care

Amazon Health Services,

(CTN News) – In a surprising move, Amazon is shutting down the hybrid virtual, in-home care service it spent years developing, underlining the challenges it faces as it moves into health care.
Neil Lindsay, senior vice president of Amazon Health Services, told staff that the service, called Amazon Care, will end by Dec. 31.

Amazon Care launched in 2019 for Seattle-based Amazon’s Washington state employees as a trial, then expanded to all 50 states last year.

Vaccinations and flu testing

Patients can connect virtually with doctors and nurses 24 hours a day. Vaccinations and flu testing are available in-person in several cities, including Seattle and Washington, D.C.

Despite promising to expand Amazon Care to 20 more cities in February, the company pulled the plug on the in-person care service. Amazon began offering the service to private employers last summer.

The email Lindsay sent to staff said  listened to employers’ feedback and improved Care.

In spite of these efforts, we don’t think is the right long-term solution for our enterprise customers.

According to him, “wasn’t going to work long-term for the large enterprise customers we’ve been targeting.”

Amazon declined to say how many jobs will be lost due to the shutdown.

Amazon continues to focus on healthcare despite setbacks. A membership-based health care service that provides virtual and in-person care, One Medical, was acquired last month for $3.9 billion. In March, One Medical had about 767,000 members and 188 medical offices.

With Amazon investing in other areas of health, Neil Saunders, managing director at GlobalData Retail, said the company is taking an aggressive stance on exiting things that aren’t working.

The closure shows how difficult it is to break into the health market. Even with acquisitions, bid to shake up the sector will be incredibly difficult and costly.”
