Tourists Complain Over Thailand Pass System Glitches

The Thai Government is making efforts to repair glitches in the Thailand Pass system following its launch on November 1st when the country reopened with no quarantine to vaccinated foreign visitors.

Visitors arriving in Thailand have complained that they experienced long delays in receiving QR codes and in some cases did not receive them at all, after the approval of their travel applications.

A Thai government spokesman said Monday that the Prime Minister has instructed state agencies to repair the new Thailand Pass system which is supposed to streamline entry requirements for both Thai and foreign travelers.

Those wishing to visit Thailand are advised to follow the instructions at tp.consular.go.th.

The spokesperson said immediate approval is offered to applicants whose vaccine certificates can be verified online by QR code. Providing the issuing country has supplied the necessary “public key infrastructure (PKI)” for Thai authorities to verify the vaccination document.

Thailand’s Department of Disease Control (DDC) also carries out inspections according to the criteria set by the Department of Health. The two agencies have put a system in place to verify Safety & Health Administration (SHA)-Plus accommodation bookings and alternative quarantine (AQ) systems.

Thailand Pass QR codes

Once the travelers have received approval, they can download the Thailand Pass QR code which enables them to prove their eligibility to airline and screening officers in Thailand. Travelers must also present an approved RT-PCR test result taken no later than 72 hours prior to traveling to Thailand.

Meanwhile, Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reports it’s working with the Digital Government Development Agency and the DDC to improve the Thailand Pass system.

Efforts are also being made to add more nations to the current list of 30 countries that have supplied public key infrastructures (PKI’s) to enable Thai authorities to validate their vacine certificates.

Verification of vaccine certificates will now take no more than three days, compared to the previous seven.

Foreign Affairs also explained why some travelers did not receive their QR codes.

They said in some cases, uploaded vaccination documents that were illegible, prompting officials to resort to manual verification which took much longer than the automated procedure.

Furthermore, some hotels booked by visitors were not linked to hospitals that conduct RT-PCR tests.

The government has also received complaints from Thais citizens overseas who registered for Thailand Pass. Many reported that the Thailand Pass system was slow, with many conditions.

Some said they booked their flight one year in advance to return home to Thailand. However, when they were about to depart from their destination, their applications had still not to have been approved.
