Royal Malay Regiment Soldier Shot at the Malaysia-Thailand Border

MALAYSIA – A soldier was seriously injured after he was shot while he was on duty at the Malaysia-Thailand border here early today.

Azamruddin Azizan, 26, who was attached to Royal Malay Regiment 2 Sungai Ara, Penang suffered wound shots on his shoulder, right elbow and both knees in the 4.30am shooting incident.

It was learnt that Azamruddin and another fellow soldier, were patrolling the border fence before he was shot from Thailand direction. However, his colleague escaped the incident unharmed. At press time, he could not be reached for comment.

Meanwhile, Kubang Pasu district police chief Superintendent Ibrahim Mohd Yusoff said it was believed that the victim was shot by a shotgun. “The victim and his colleague were about to inspect the border fence, when suddenly a single shot was fired from the other side of the fence.” “His friend quickly took the wounded victim to safety while waiting for help to come.”

“Their officer in charge arrived at the scene few minutes later and rushed the victim to Tuanku Fauziah Hospital in Kangar,” he said when met.

Pointing out that it was dark when the incident took place, Ibrahim said it was hard to tell the number of suspects involved in the shooting.

It was also believed that the suspect was firing shot from behind the bushes which was 30 m away from the border fence.

The victim, who was expected to tie a knot with his fiancee in the near future, was reported ina stable condition.
