PATTANI – Four people, among them a ranger and a policeman, were killed and six other people were injured in three cases of violence today in the Pattani and Yala provinces, according to police.
Three people, one of them the ranger, were killed and two others injured in Pattani while the policeman was killed and four people were injured in Yala, they said.
In Pattani, a ranger and a Buddhist monk were killed after a group of six men on three motorcycles opened fire with M16 rifles as the duo and another ranger were going to get some food from Buddhist devotees at about 7 am in Kampung Saiya Praya in the Penarek district.
The other ranger was injured, along with a passing civilian who was hit by a stray bullet, said Penarek police chief Pol. Col. Manit Yimsai.
In another incident, at 7.20 am in the Khok Po district, a civilian was killed when he was hit in the head while riding a motorcycle from his house to the market.
In Yala, a policeman was killed while four other people were injured in a bomb attack and a subsequent battle with a separatist group at 11 am, said Thanto district police chief Pol. Col. Charas Shinnapon.
He said the policeman was returning after inspecting the site where a bomb attack took place at 8.47 am.
