Russian Tourist Murdered Inside His Hotel Room in Pattaya

CHON BURI – A Russian man was found dead in a hotel room in Pattaya on Tuesday and is believed to have been strangled, police said on Wednesday.

Pol Lt Col Prasit Mansri, an investigating officer of Muang Pattaya police station, said he received a report on Tuesday afternoon that a foreigner was found dead in room number 822 of a hotel in Central Pattya.

The victim was a successful manager of an architectural firm from St. Petersburg in Russia. His name was Andrei Komarov.

The Russian was identified as Andrei Komarov, 39, an architect from St Petersburg.

Komarov, who checked into the hotel on Feb 16, was found lying on the floor, wearing only a pair of jeans. Blood was coming from his eyes, nose and mouth and there were bruises on his neck and left arm.

Police believed Andrei Komarov died about 10 hours before his body was discovered.

In the room, police found many boxes of condoms and bloodstains on a pillow cover and a blanket. There were also blood splatters on the floor and wall of the room.

Police also found a black leather belt with its buckle removed on a dressing table and believed it was used to strangle the victim.

The Russian’s cell phone, passport and credit card were in the room but his wallet and cash were gone.

Hotel receptionist Sopaporn Phuangthong, 37,   told investigators that Komarov was due to check out on Tuesday, so she knocked on his room door but there was no response.

The staff then decided to enter the room and found Komarov lying on the floor.

Witnesses told police that Komarov usually returned to his room late at night in an intoxicated condition. The Russian also took Thai women to his room and he was visited by Thais and foreigners at times.

Police suspected Komarov’s death might be related to robbery, or adultery, or that he was involved in a brawl.
