Day Six of Songkrans Seven Dangerous Days, 306 Deaths, and 3,070 Injuries
CHIANG RAI – On the Sixth Day of Songkrans Seven Dangerous Days the carnage count of road deaths reached 306 with 55 more people killed in a single day yesterday and 538 injured.
A total of 509 highway accidents happened nationwide yesterday, bringing total death toll in the past six days of the dangerous period to 306 deaths, and 3,070 injuries in a total 2,915 highway accidents.
According to the road accidents prevention and mitigation center, nearly 3,000 accidents occurred on the road during the 6 day period.
Nakhon Ratchasima Province has reported 91 accidents, all involved local people and most of them had been caused by drunk driving, speeding and unsafe lane changes. Most of them were motor bike accidents and the time of day most crashes occurred was between 4-8 PM, said the province.
On day six last year the death toll was 277 with 2,926 injured, drunk driving is the main cause of most fatal accidents during Songkran.
Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on Wednesday expressed concerns over the holidaymakers who are returning from their long weekend breaks and asked authorities to strictly enforce security.  He called on motorists to drive responsibly and be kind on the road, a deputy spokesman said.
