How big is online poker in 2023? This is as good a question and, while there are many uncertainties, there are some hard facts that will make you realize the significance of the industry.

Although most numbers tend to be somewhat contradictor, some research suggests that in 2022 alone, the online poker market size reached $86.2 billion in terms of total revenue.

This is a lot, but it’s still not much compared to the ambitious projections for the industry, which put the revenue generated by the industry at $237.5 billion by 2030 – a three-fold increase more or less.

Yet, USA real money poker websites are a moving target, with a lot happening to regulate the activity, and many important markets still not fully embracing it, which means that the estimates could far surpass these early day forecasts.

One thing is certain, though – card rooms are generating a solid revenue online and while players still reunite for the biggest events in-person and at land-based venues, the growth of the online poker segment is only going to continue over the coming years.

Going from Paupers to Kings – The Online Poker Rooms of 2023

Online poker was often a looked-down concept. Although the core idea was solid, not many wanted to believe that it would work.

The incept of online poker goes back to the 1990s when the first poker rooms begun taking off, setting the roadmap for today’s regulated entities.

The early-day websites operated in a limbo, charting the way in a vertical where no business has ventured before.

Over the years, and despite the setbacks, the majority of card rooms managed to do well, establishing themselves as worthwhile and trustworthy entities.

Revenue, though, was not just a matter of interest on the part of the community. Card rooms had to work hard to boost their income and generated sufficient funds to keep going.

The early days mostly focused on building the infrastructure – bug-free platforms that could operate at an increasing capacity.

This would eventually lead to the card rooms scaling their offer and as a result – boosting their revenue.

But even the early days of online poker success weren’t enough to convince the world that poker was a game of skill that was worth taking into consideration.

Opinions changed after Chris Moneymaker, a legendary poker player, who went from an unknown online avatar and moniker to a very real and significant part of the community.

Moneymaker won the $10,000 World Championship Event in 2003, grabbing the $2,500,000 prize with him.

It was not just that Moneymaker was anonymous up to that point. It was the fact that he had used an online poker room tournament to qualify for the land-based event that immediately put card rooms on the radar.

Suddenly, people realized that they could leverage their skill to qualify through online satellites, which, understandably, had an immediate impact on online poker rooms.

They saw a significant uptake in the numbers of players and had to double down on infrastructural investment and operational costs. Even with this increased pressure, though, online poker sites continued to grow.

They generated more revenue and continued to offer excellent qualifiers as well as their own homebrew tournaments that soon began to feature seven-figure prize pools all of their own.

Moneymaker was not the only catalyst of the big exposure of online card rooms to global audiences, but he definitely helped popularize them.

Where Are Online Poker Rooms Headed Today?

Growth seems to be the watchword here with hardly any objective reason to believe that the interest in the online poker community will experience a slowdown any time soon.

There have been challenges, of course. The prominence of online poker has brought in the regulators and lawmakers who have objected to some of the unchecked growth of card rooms.

Many have been subjected to heavy regulation that continues to this day. Even in this heightened regulatory context, however, the fact remains that online poker revenue continues to increase.

Just like back in the day when card rooms decided to invest in servers and infrastructure in anticipation of increasing demand – and predicting a solid bottom line as a result –

so are companies willing to comply with any rules thrown at them these days so that they can continue to provide a product that is becoming of increasing interest to online poker.

Online poker room revenue has been growing at an impressive pace globally. The United States is not the only leader, with Europe also hosting many events across the entire continent and Canada too playing an important role in the global rake and online card room revenue.

Players from all over the world are seeking to get to know the game of poker, and they are not necessarily heading to land-based casinos or card room.

In fact, the majority are choosing to stick with online poker rooms instead. These card rooms have become increasingly accommodating and social, allowing players to interact and learn the game at their own pace.

There is no real pressure on players who frequent online card rooms, too, as the poker rooms know that they ought to make people feel at home to gain long-term benefits and see a direct impact on their bottom line.

In a word, online poker rooms are headed for profitability. The journey there is not going to be as simple, and there will often be setbacks. However, the rekindled interest in poker is headed one way – online.

Do Predictions for Revenue Truly Matter

At the end of the day, online poker and global revenue from poker is increasing. This is an undeniable fact and so far as players are concerned, this trend is definitely helpful.

More money going into poker means that more people are playing and this, in turn, benefits you as the players.

Poker rooms do make a profit, this is true, but the more revenue they have to play around with, the bigger the prize pools get, and generally – the more fun online poker is.

Card rooms are also making sure that online and land-based operations are sticking closer together, creating a 360-degree experience that stands out with distinct synergies.
