I Started My Own Company. Here Are the Most Important Things I Learned

A few years ago, I had the opportunity to start my own company. I can confidently say that it has been an experience full of lows, highs, and everything in between!

I began without formal training and had to play catch-up. That said, I’ve learned a lot along the way. Here are some of the best tips for anyone starting a business on their own!

Learn How to Manage Employees

When I began my business, I didn’t have any formal management experience. I worked alone and outsourced certain tasks when I needed to. When I brought on my first employees, I had no idea how to effectively manage them.

So, I took an online management class that taught me all of the skills I needed to be successful as a manager. Communication is 90% of great management, and I learned how to effectively voice my ideas while motivating my team.

If you haven’t learned management skills and are considering taking on employees, I would strongly suggest taking a class first. It will help you run your business 10x more efficiently!

Communicate More Efficiently

Simply put, if you don’t have strong communication skills, you’ll have a hard time keeping things running smoothly and getting the proper output from your staff.

Communication isn’t just telling your team what to do, though. It also entails keeping everyone motivated, happy, and focused on a common goal. It’s the ability to give feedback in a polite, formal way that doesn’t ignore anyone’s feelings!

Form a Network and Learn from Them

Another useful tip is to form a network of connections and gain insider knowledge.

As some would say, it’s all about who you know! Having a strong network of professionals can help you tremendously either when you’re building a business or taking it to the top.

Networking helps you stay on the cutting edge of major trends and gives you the right support when you most need it.

An easy way to form connections is to attend business conventions, especially if they pertain to your niche of the market.

Conferences are a wonderful way to meet successful and like-minded people, as well as speakers who will tell you about their experiences, whether they be positive or negative.

Refreshing My Appearance

As I aged, I realized that my appearance wasn’t reassuring to potential business partners and clients. My gray hair and wrinkles held me back and made me look much older than I was!

So, I decided to get a male facelift to look and feel 10 years younger. The difference was staggering—afterward, I made more deals than I ever had! I’m not saying that you must do exactly what I did, but it’s a good idea to try things out that make you look more presentable.

It will work wonders for your confidence and professional developments!

Empathize and Empower Your Staff

The ability to empathize with team members is essential to running a successful business. It is integral to build a group of skilled individuals who work well together and have each other’s best interests in mind.

Even more important is for you to get in the dirt and do good work alongside your employees. After all, the most successful generals eat the same food as their soldiers!

By working alongside your employees, you are actively showing how much you care about the company.

This inspires everyone to work harder. You don’t want your employees to feel alienated or taken advantage of—you want them to feel like they’re part of a thriving team!

Deal with Mistakes the Right Way

Everyone makes mistakes, but it’s how you deal with those mistakes that determines your success or failure.

Not every business decision you make will be groundbreaking. In fact, many of your choices will either lead nowhere or have no significant effect on the company. But, as they say, you can learn a lot from your missteps!

So, in the face of problems, focus on how you respond. If you learn from past mistakes and grow from them, you’re doing the right thing, and will take your company to the moon!
