7.8 Million Methamphetamine Pills From Laos Seized

Police have seized nearly 6 million methamphetamine pills uncovered in the back of a pickup truck in northeastern Thailand on Thursday night. Two men were arrested.

Police officers along with army soldiers stopped and searched the pickup truck at a roadside checkpoint in northeastern Thailand’s Ubon Ratchathani province.

Upon a search of the vehicle, they uncovered 14 sacks under a canvas sheet covering the back of the pickup truck. The sack contained a total of 5.93 million methamphetamine pills aka (Yaba).

Upon questioning, the pickup truck driver Mr. Kittisak Artsri and his passenger Mr. Peerapong Nontasingh said they were delivering drugs for a Lao national.

They were to deliver the drugs to Nakhon Ratchasima province and were to be paid 400,000 baht.

According to Ubon Ratchathani police, Mr. Kittisak, the pickup truck driver had previously been arrested and prosecuted on drug-related charges. After serving nine years in prison, he was released three years ago.

Both suspects were charged with possession of illicit drugs. They were taken to the city police station for formal charges.

Methamphetamine pills seized in Khon Kaen

Last week Highway police seized 1,980,000 methamphetamine pills from a minivan after a vehicle chase in northeastern Thailand’s Khon Kaen province.

Police at a checkpoint stopped a Toyota Alphard minivan for a search. As police officers prepared to search the Toyota minivan, the driver suddenly sped off, prompting police to give chase.

As the police car drew behind the Toyota minivan, the driver stopped and jumped out fleeing into a roadside sugarcane plantation.

Police searched the minivan and found 330 packages each containing 6,000 methamphetamine pills, totalling 1.98 million pills. Police also found a bag containing 1 kilogram of crystal meth under the driver’s seat.

Drug suppression police believed the drugs had been smuggled into the country from neighbouring Laos. They believe they were destined for Bangkok or southern Thailand.

Drugs and the vehicle were later handed over to Nam Phong police station. The Toyota minivan driver remains at large.
