CHIANG RAI – Mae Fah Luang Airport of Chiang Rai province has urged citizens not to release floating lanterns during the Loy Krathong festival.

AOT President Nitinai Sirismatthakarn revealed the AOT has issued regulations for the use of floating lanterns during the Loy Krathong Festival at Chiang Mai Airport and Mae Fah Luang Chiang Rai Airport.

The airport has especially asked that between the hours of 9PM and 1AM on the days, lanterns should not be released. It noted rather, that the tradition of releasing floating lanterns to celebrate Loy Krathong should be done between 10AM and 12PM on November 14 only and away from official flight paths. Districts where lanterns would interfere with flights include Muang, Mae Lao, Pan, Wiengchai, Wiengchiangrung and Pa Dad.

All airborne objects released during this festival must be no larger than 1 cubic meter, with 90 centimeters in width, and a maximum height of 140 centimeters. Lanterns must be made using natural materials, and must be fueled only by paraffin or beeswax soaked paper rolls, weighing no more than 55 grams, which would provide no more than 8 minutes of ignition.

Lanterns equipped with fireworks or other items are strictly prohibited during this year’s festival.
