Imran Khan, Former Pakistani Prime Minister, Arrested In Islamabad

(CTN News) – As a result of months of political turmoil in Pakistan, former Prime Minister Imran Khan has been detained during a court appearance in Islamabad, amid corruption allegations.

Musarrat Jamshed Cheema, a leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-eInsaf (PTI) party, confirmed Imran Khan’s arrest on Tuesday.

During his biometrics procedure, he was picked up by the Rangers, referring to the paramilitary group, from which he had undergone his biometrics procedure.

According to Akbar Nasir Khan, a top police official in Islamabad, was arrested in connection with a case related to the Al-Qadir Trust. This was reported to Al Jazeera. As part of the investigation into the case, the National Accountability Bureau, which is in charge of fighting corruption, had issued an arrest warrant against Khan on May 1.

Imran Khan has faced dozens of charges since being removed from power last year. These charges he denies and claims are politically motivated.

Imran Khan is alleged to have been kicked and hit on the head by the Rangers before police took him away. His lawyer denied those charges.

As a result of the forceful entry of the rangers, the door and window [of the room] were broken. According to a video posted on the PTI’s social media account, the assailants picked up Imran Khan from his wheelchair, hit him on the head and kicked him,” Gohar Ali Khan, who was accompanying the former prime minister to the Islamabad High Court, said in the video.

“I fell during the commotion that followed. In addition to pepper spraying him, he was taken away by the Rangers,” said the lawyer.

As far as Ali Khan is concerned, no police officials were present in the room from where Khan was arrested at the time.

According to a tweet by Fawad Chaudhry, a member of the PTI, the Islamabad High Court complex is “occupied” by the Rangers and women lawyers are being tortured inside the court complex.

On local media, footage showed Khan being escorted to a Rangers car and taken to an unknown location after he was escorted.

After Khan’s arrest, which they described as an abduction, PTI officials called on their supporters to take to the streets.

“It is time for Pakistan’s brave people to step forward and defend their country,” said the party on its Twitter account.

As a result of this, the police in Islamabad have warned that an order that prohibits gatherings of more than four people will be strictly enforced.

There have been reports that Aamer Farooq, the chief justice of the Islamabad High Court, has ordered government officials to appear before the court over Imran Khan’s arrest.

As a result of a vote of no confidence in parliament held on April 20, 2022, the cricketer-turned-politician aged 70 was voted out of power. As a result, he has been campaigning for the call of early elections, due to take place in October this year, since then.
