CHIANG MAI – In a massive blow to illegal drug networks in Northern Thailand, local police have seized an incredible 5 million meth pills. The shocking discovery happened early Monday morning, June 1, in the Galyani Vadhana district of Chiang Mai. This major bust followed a deadly crash during a high-speed police chase.
Police officers from the Galyani Vadhana Police Station had received earlier intelligence from local sources. They learned that drug smugglers were planning to move a very large shipment of illegal drugs through their area. The smugglers planned to use the winding mountain roads connecting the Galyani Vadhana and Samoeng districts. Armed with this knowledge, officers set up careful patrols along the route to catch the criminals in the act.
At roughly 1:30 AM, officers spotted a vehicle that perfectly matched the description given by their informants. It was a grey Isuzu pickup truck bearing Chiang Mai license plates. The truck was fitted with a tall steel frame and covered with a thick canvas tarp, which is a common method used to hide illegal cargo.
The truck was traveling near Ban Chaem Noi, a small village in the Ban Chan subdistrict. It was heading steadily toward the Samoeng district. Officers began to quietly trail the vehicle to confirm their suspicions.
However, the driver soon realized he was being followed by law enforcement. In a desperate attempt to escape, he suddenly turned off the main road and sped onto a small, poorly lit side street in the Mae Daet subdistrict.
The secondary road was dark, narrow, and simply not meant for high speeds. The driver pushed the heavily loaded pickup truck much too fast. After driving only about 200 meters down the tight dirt lane, the driver completely lost control of the vehicle.
The speeding truck slammed violently into a large dirt mound on the side of the road. The massive force of the crash caused the vehicle to flip over, eventually coming to rest on its side.
When police officers arrived at the crash site just moments later, they immediately checked on the driver. Sadly, the man, who was the only person in the vehicle, had died instantly from the severe impact of the crash.
What Police Found at the Scene
After securing the area, officers began to carefully inspect the wrecked truck and the surrounding ground. The crash had torn open the canvas cover, spilling the secret cargo out onto the road.

- The Cargo: 25 large, modified fertilizer sacks were scattered inside the truck bed and across the dirt road.
- The Packaging: Each heavy sack was tightly wrapped in thick black plastic bags to protect it from the weather and hide the contents.
- The Drugs: When officers opened the sacks to check the contents, they found illegal methamphetamine, widely known in Thailand as “Yaba” (crazy medicine).
- The Total Amount: The combined total across all 25 sacks was an estimated 5,000,000 pills.
The local police quickly called for backup. They contacted special forensic teams and local medical doctors to officially examine the crash site. The body of the driver was taken for a formal medical exam and identification.
Meanwhile, all 5 million illegal pills were gathered, officially recorded as evidence, and taken directly to the Galyani Vadhana Police Station.
This massive seizure is just the beginning. Police are now working hard to trace where the drugs came from and where they were supposed to go. By examining the truck, the driver’s background, and the packaging, they hope to track down the larger criminal group responsible for this shipment.
