CHIANGRAI TIMES – A Thai National was among three men in the pickup that caused a citywide electricity blackout in Tachilek, Myanmar, on Saturday, the neighboring country’s police have told Chiang Rai police.

Pol Maj Gen Surachet Thopunyanon, Chiang Rai police chief, said he was informed by Tachilek police that they had detained a Thai national from Chiang Mai’s Doi Saket district.

Tachilek police said he was among three men in a pickup truck that crashed into a power pylon in front of a hotel building in Tachilek.

It caused an electricity blackout, which occurred shortly before two bombs at an 18-hole golf course at the Regina Hotel and Golf Club exploded.

Myanmar authorities suspect the three men might have something to do with the blasts at the golf course.

The Thai man, whose name was not revealed, was injured in accident and is being treated at a Chiang Rai hospital.

“We can’t reveal details at the moment. We have to wait for the investigation by Myanmar police first,” Pol Maj Gen Surachet said.

Nevertheless, he has sent police to check on the condition of the man and help Myanmar police while the man is in custody. Police also have stepped up security in Chiang Rai’s Mae Sai district amid concerns some groups might be planning attacks on Thai soil.
