Heavier fines and penalties for drivers who go over the speed limit

CHIANG RAI – Authorities are gearing up for the seven dangerous days period as commuters are planning to travel home during the New Year holidays.

The Traffic Police Division is setting up sobriety checkpoints in Bangkok to prevent road accidents during the festive period. Police will also perform breathalyzer tests on partygoers at selected entertainment venues as part of a new anti-drunk driving initiative.

Heavier fines and penalties for drivers who go over the speed limit and for motorists who fail to don helmets are also expected.

In the northern province of Chiang Mai, private buses, cars and pickup trucks will be banned from traveling up the mountainous road to Doi Suthep between December 28 and January 2 in a bid to combat traffic congestion during the seven dangerous days of the New Year period.- Orapa Chueyprasit
