CHIANG RAI -The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, Earth Net Foundation and National Human Rights Commission have agreed to encourage villagers in former forest areas to play a role in reforestation.

Relevant agencies plan to revive 9,250 rai of denuded forest land in 2016 and another 20,000 rai in 2026. More than 300 members of Chiang Rai forest conservation and organic agriculture villages, witnessed the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing ceremony and pledged to help with the mission.

The villagers and officials also planted trees together at Forestry Training Center 4 in celebration of the annual National Tree Day.

Meanwhile, The Provincial Office for Natural Resources and the Environment of Chiang Mai has held an environmental protection workshop for local bodies.

Participants included community leaders and representatives of public and private agencies from the districts of Mae Taeng, Chiang Dao, Phrao, Fang, Mae Ai and Chai Prakan. The workshop featured lectures on forest conservation, wildfire and haze prevention and control, as well as sustainable water management.

The activity also enabled participants to exchange ideas on construction of weirs to maintain the ecosystem and solve haze and wildfire problems. The Provincial Office for Natural Resources and the Environment of Chiang Mai expects the workshop to forge cooperation in environmental protection among different sectors in line with the Pracharat policy.
