Eight Dead, 2 Missing after Landslide Hits Village in the Northern Province of Nan
NAN – Eight people have been killed and two others are missing after a landslide caused by heavy rain hit a village in Bo Klua district of Nan province in the North this morning.
The landslide reportedly occurred at abut 6.10am when earth and rocks fell downhill over four houses in Huay Khab village in Tambon Bo Klua Nua.
Responding to a request from the disaster prevention and mitigation office of Bo Klua district, Col Rattana Pattanasophon, commander of the 32nd Ranger Regiment of the Pha Muang Force, dispatched four rescue teams to the area for a search and rescue operation.
It was initially reported that eight people, all from the same family and two others were still missing. One of those killed was identified as Tui Jaiping, 49.
Mr Preecha on Saturday evening declared the search operation over, and said authorities would meet to discuss the rehabilitation plan for the area.
Officials remain on full alert as cracks have been found for a distance of 200 metres on the mountain above the community. This raised concern that there might be a new round of mudslides, he said.
Narong Inso, head of the Nan disaster prevention and mitigation office, said more than 200 residents from 61 households had been left homeless from the landslide and all were evacuated.
